More Counties Approved for FEMA Assistance Under Presidential Major Disaster Declaration
Governor Kim Reynolds on Wednesday announced that Cherokee and Palo Alto are among a few additional counties approved to receive public assistance for emergency protective measures and permanent work under the previously approved FEMA Major Disaster Declaration for Iowa counties where significant damage was sustained from severe weather events, including flooding.
Algona Couple are July “1440” Award Recipients
–An Algona couple are the latest recipients of the ”1440 Citizen of the Month” from the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office. Kossuth County Sheriff Roger Fisher announced this week that Ray and Marilyn Nielsen are the “1440” recipients for the month of July, as they were nominated for their years of service to their church and community.
City Working to Find Reasons for Sewer Backups
–The City of Algona is working with a pair of engineering firms to try and find solutions for residents impacted by sewer back ups earlier this year. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News that the city has WHKS and Bolton & Menk looking for ways to identify how the sewer system is being inundated in certain areas of town.

ILCC Recognized for Support of Military Families
–Iowa Lakes Community College is being recognized as Military Spouse Friendly for its commitment to providing educational opportunities to area veterans and their family members. The “Gold” designation comes from Military Spouse Magazine and covers for the 2024-2025 school year. Tim Ireland serves as the Veteran’s Center Director at Iowa Lakes, and he tells KLGA News that they must submit information on the students they are assisting to receive this award.
