Fortuna Man Sentenced to 21+ Years in Prison After Fatal Shooting in Arcata
Press release from the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office:. On December 7, 2023, a Humboldt County jury found 25-year-old Gregory N. Mattox guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter of 36-year-old Joshua Gephart, as well as being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Providing False Information to Law Enforcement with the Intent to Evade Justice. Today, the Honorable Judge Cockrum sentenced Mattox to serve 21 years and 8 months in prison for his crimes.
CPH Alum to Paint Mural at Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center During Eureka Street Art Festival
Cal Poly Humboldt’s Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center will receive a mural from local artist Tony Diaz (‘13, Art) for the Eureka Street Art Festival. The 7th annual, and final, Eureka Street Art Festival is set to begin July 29 through Aug. 2 and will feature 18 artists from California, including artists from Humboldt County, who will paint murals throughout the city of Eureka. The festival offers the public an opportunity to watch the creation of large-scale pieces of world-class art and interact with artists through artist talks and daily tours.
Multiple Local Law Enforcement Agencies Get Crisis Intervention Training
Crisis Intervention Team training provides increased knowledge of Behavioral health issues. Over 35 law enforcement, probation and tribal officers along with mental health service providers from agencies across the county participated in a five-day Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training to learn strategies to better respond to people experiencing mental health crises.
Eureka Mourns the Passing of Chief Murl Harpham
By request of the Mayor and order of the City Manager, all flags at City facilities will be flown at half-staff beginning today through Friday, August 9, 2024 in honor of Murl Harpham, Chief of Police. Chief Harpham passed away earlier today, July 31, 2024 at 91 years of age. Murl Harpham served the City of Eureka as a Police Officer, Sergeant, Captain and finally as Chief of Police for over 56 Years. At the time of his retirement in 2014, Chief Harpham had served EPD, his original hiring agency, longer than any other officer in the State of California.
Northern California forecast: Sierra air quality issues, Valley heat Thursday
Smoke from the Park Fire created poor air quality conditions above 3000 feet on Wednesday afternoon. More of the same is expected on Thursday. Light winds around the fire are beneficial for fire crews, but the lack of a breeze is allowing that smoke to settle into lower elevations at night. Those planning to be outdoors in the Sierra, including the Tahoe region, should check air quality conditions first. An AQI reading of 150 or higher indicates that air pollution could be hazardous for people with chronic health issues.
Smoke From a Central Valley Wildfire, Not the Park Fire, Likely to Enter Bay Area

Fast food workers ask state for further wage increases

The proposed yearly 3.5% increase is a response to rising inflation, the letter said.The council was formed to establish wages and regulations for the fast-food industry through legislation signed by Gov.
