It's time to once again join several Detroit lawyers rocking for a cause as Lawlapalooza returns to the Magic Bag in Ferndale on Friday, Aug. 2.

The annual event features musical performances by acts made up of local lawyers and judges to raise funds for important charitable causes.

Over the past two years, organizers raised more than $20,000 for charities like ALS Therapy Development Institute and Autism Alliance of Michigan.

“We’ve really been blown away by the support we’ve gotten from the community as we continue to grow this event,” said Greg Jones, an employment law attorney with Gasoriek Morgan in Farmington Hills and an organizer of the event.

This year’s charity is the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, the nation’s leading pulmonary fibrosis patient education and advocacy organization.

The foundation is particularly meaningful Jones, whose mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2022.

“My mom’s been our biggest supporter from day one,” Jones said. “This disease takes more and more from her each day. I can’t think of a better cause than trying to put a stop to something so cruel.”

Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease marked by progressive scaring in the lungs, which causes the tissue to become thickened and stiff. The lungs eventually lose their ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream, making everyday activities such as breathing and walking increasingly difficult. There is no known cure for the disease and it is often fatal within three to five years of diagnosis.

Doors open at 7 p.m. The show kicks off with a legal-themed performance by The Forum Shoppers, a barbershop quartet featuring retired Wayne County Circuit Court Chief Judge William Giovan.

Attendees will enjoy sets from lawyer-led rock bands like The Common Scolds and The 3148s as well as an acoustic performance from attorney Cameron Getto. Other attorneys participating thisfrom Greig, Kennedy, Seifert & Fitzgibbons; Bashore Green; Kramer, Corbett, Harding & Dombrowski; The Law Offices of Brian A Robillard; The Law Offices of Gail Storck and Zausmer.

Other features include an old-time strong-man demonstration by The Mike Morse Law Firm’s Don Cummings, who holds multiple world-records for bending nails, bolts, horseshoes and structural steel bars with his bare hands. Fox 2’s Derek Kevra is hosting this year’s show.

Organizers of Lawapalooza seek to raise funds through sponsorships, ticket sales and donations. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 online or at the Magic Bag box office, or at the door for $25.
