A dangerous heat dome that continues to smother much of the West intensifies this weekend with triple-digit thermometer readings expected for many western Montana valleys.Beginning Friday, low-lying areas like Libby and Plains will endure four days of excessive heat warnings. A mercury-bursting high of 107 is possible Sunday in Libby, with 105 on Monday. The warning area encompasses all of Lincoln, Sanders and Mineral counties.Meanwhile, a heat advisory is in place for Flathead County through July 24, with highs in Kalispell hitting 99 on Sunday and 98 Monday. Flathead Forest OKs 3 projects to reduce wildfire risks
Work is expected to begin this fall on projects aimed at reducing the severity of wildfires at three locations around the Flathead Valley.The Flathead National Forest on Wednesday approved up to 1,633 acres of fuel breaks along Ashely Lake west of Kalispell, Good Creek northwest of Whitefish and Lion Hill near Martin City. Each of the projects is located within a so-called wildland urban interface where forested areas abut residential communities. Whitefish Community Foundation recently awarded a $50,000 grant to ImagineIF Library Foundation for the new Flathead County Library Bigfork branch.ImagineIF Library Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for library programs and services that are not included in Flathead County’s budget. Habitat for Humanity homes are available for qualified buyers
Habitat for Humanity of Flathead Valley is currently accepting applications for three homes, one in Columbia Falls and two in Kalispell. The house in Columbia Falls is a pre-existing Habitat home at 19 Mitchell Way. It is a two-bedroom, one-bath home. The two homes to be built later this year in Kalispell are duplex-style townhouses with attached garages. The townhouses will also be two-bedroom units with a bath and a half.
