City of Florence to celebrate grand opening of Field of Dreams, all-turf fields

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Officials with the City of Florence will celebrate the grand opening of the new Sportsplex Pod and several turf fields on Thursday afternoon.

According to the office of Mayor Andrew Betterton, the celebration will commence with a ribbon-cutting, followed by an inaugural game on the Field of Dreams.

The state-of-the-art field is dedicated to the Bambino Buddy-Ball League, a league specifically designed for athletes with special needs.

Following the game, the new field will host the opening ceremony for the 57 teams participating in the Babe Ruth-Cal Ripkin World Series Softball Tournament.

There will be a fireworks show to end the festivities.

The event starts at 3:30 p.m., followed by the inaugural game at 4:00 p.m.
