FLORENCE, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A 4-year-old is in critical condition after authorities said they wandered away from home early Sunday and were hit by a car.

Deputies said that just before 1 a.m., a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was heading west on the Weaver Road overpass over I-75 when the child was hit.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the driver did not see the child walk into the road. Investigations showed that the child lived in a nearby apartment complex on Mission Lane and had left home after his family had gone to sleep for the night.

They were flown to a children’s hospital and are being treated for what authorities described as life-threatening injuries.
