However, as the Sunshine State continues to attract an influx of new residents, it has also become a prime target for unscrupulous movers and brokers looking to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers.

The Florida legislature has enacted a new law to crack down on moving scams and safeguard Floridians and those relocating within the state.

Effective July 1st, the updated Chapter 507 of the Florida Statutes introduces a comprehensive set of consumer protection measures for household moving services. The key provisions of this groundbreaking legislation include:

All moving companies and brokers operating within Florida, whether for interstate or intrastate moves, are now required to register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This ensures proper vetting and authorization, preventing unscrupulous operators from preying on vulnerable consumers.

Movers are now mandated to provide detailed and clear estimates and contracts, outlining all potential costs, dates, and terms. This enhanced transparency aims to prevent hidden fees and unexpected charges that can catch unsuspecting customers off guard.

The new law establishes strict guidelines for advertising moving services, prohibiting false claims and requiring the clear disclosure of a company’s registration status. This measure helps consumers make informed decisions when selecting a reputable mover.

The legislation introduces harsh penalties for movers and their employees who refuse to comply with lawful orders from law enforcement to relinquish a client’s household goods. Violators now face third-degree felony charges and fines up to $50,000, a significant deterrent against unethical practices.

“Moving is stressful, and deceitful movers can compound the stress involved with relocating. Starting today in Florida, there is a new law in place to better protect consumers trying to relocate. The “Scams at a Glance: On the Move” resource offers a wealth of valuable insights to help consumers protect themselves during the relocation process. Some of the critical tips highlighted in the guide include:

1. Verify Licensing : Ensure that interstate movers are licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and that intrastate movers and brokers are licensed with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
2. Scrutinize Contracts : Thoroughly read and understand all contract documents before signing, paying close attention to potential costs, dates, and terms.
3. Transport Valuables Yourself : Consider personally transporting important items, such as daily medications or essential supplies, that will be needed immediately upon arrival at the new destination.
4. Report Suspicious Activity : If you suspect a moving scam, contact the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services by filing a complaint online or by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352).
