(CBS DETROIT) - Miss Michigan Alma Cooper was crowned Miss USA 2024 over the weekend following a controversial year for the pageant.The 22-year-old U.S. Army officer from Okemos was named at the 73rd pageant on Sunday in Los Angeles, California. Cooper succeeds Savannah Gankiewicz from Hawaii, who inherited Miss USA 2023 after Noelia Voight withdrew from her role earlier this year, urging people to prioritize their mental health.  Cooper will compete in the Miss Universe competition in November. Connor Perry from Kentucky and Danika Christopherson from Oklahoma were named first and second runners-up, respectively.Cooper is a West Point graduate, a Knight-Hennessy scholar and is working toward her master's degree in data science at Stanford University, according to her Instagram page. Her title win comes 14 years after Rima Fakih became the last Miss USA winner from Michigan.NBA legend Magic Johnson commended Cooper on social media, saying "You've made all of us Michiganders proud and represented the Afro-Latina community admirably!"

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers police are investigating the gruesome discovery of a burned body in a shopping cart. The body was found by officials who were responding to a fire under the Oak Street Bridge near the Yonkers-Mt. Vernon border at around 2 a.m. Monday. Officials extinguished the fire before making the shocking discovery of a body in a shopping cart on the sidewalk.Police said the body was likely placed in the cart and then set on fire.    Investigators have been unable to determine victim's IDThe age and gender of the victim remain unknown. According to police, the body was burned so badly that investigators are having a difficult time figuring out who they were and how they died.     But a source close to the investigation told CBS News New York there is evidence the victim was killed in New York City before their body was disposed of in Yonkers.Police are reviewing surveillance video and looking for any witnesses who could help them figure out what happened.

Josue Garriga III, 34, faces a mandatory penalty of 10 years to life in federal prison and must register as a sex offender. A sentencing date has not been set.

A Frontier pilot was handcuffed on board an aircraft in Houston and removed by Houston Police ahead of the flight's scheduled departure, officials confirmed on Saturday. The pilot was removed from Flight 3195 ahead of its planned departure from Houston to Dallas. Houston police identified the pilot as Seymour Walker, 45, who was wanted on an assault-family violence warrant.Law enforcement said they waited until the plane arrived at a specific gate at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport about 4 p.m. local time. When all passengers deplaned, officers boarded the aircraft and took the pilot into "custody without incident," police said. Frontier Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement to CBS News, saying "The activity occurred prior to the start of boarding for Flight 3195 scheduled from IAH to Dallas Forth Worth (DFW). A replacement crew member was not immediately available and therefore the flight was canceled."Passengers were offered a full refund, credit, or a spot on the next available Frontier flight.  "Airlines report incidents such as this to the FAA office that oversees them, and we investigate all pilot-related issues," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
