Lee County Utilities ends routine free chlorine flush

Lee County Utilities will end the free chlorine flush on Tuesday, May 21, which will involve converting its disinfection process from free chlorine residual to chloramines as the primary disinfectant.

The free chlorine flush, which began May 1, is a routine measure standard among water utilities that use chloramines as a primary disinfectant. Residents who use a kidney dialysis machine at home should contact an equipment supplier to install the proper filtering equipment.

Tropical fish or aquatic animal owners should contact a local tropical fish store for appropriate pretreatment of water before adding water to tanks.

Customers may notice a temporary change in the water’s taste, odor and color, which is not harmful. Even though the conversion of disinfection will begin on May 21, it will take approximately one week for the service area to be converted from a free chlorine residual to a chloramine residual.

Customers can call Lee County Utilities from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays at 239-533-8845.

Meet & Greet at Coast Guard Auxiliary’s National Safe Boating Week Breakfast

Get to know the missions of the U.S. Coast Guard and Auxiliary at a meet-and-greet breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at Sunflower Café, 11410 Summerlin Square Drive, Fort Myers Beach, as part of National Safe Boating Week.

Recreational boating is fun and enjoyable, but waterways can sometimes become crowded and create chaos and confusion. Not knowing or obeying the Navigation Rules or the nautical “Rules of the Road,” drinking alcohol or taking drugs while operating a boat, or choosing not to wear your life jacket are all examples of human error or a lack of proper judgment. All too often, this misjudgment turns into a search and rescue case.

Representatives from the Coast Guard and Auxiliary will be available to answer questions about search and rescue, missions, facilities, training, and capabilities. Register online at www.Aux91FMB.org/ Breakfast.

The Safe Boating Campaign is a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating. The National Safe Boating Council leads it and has support from boating safety advocates worldwide. National Safe Boating Week is May 18- 24.
