Fiddler Crabs Love to Wave
Ourmshome.com – Mark W. LaSalle, Ph.D. – 2024-07-20 09:08:00. SUMMARY: Fiddler crabs, notable for the males' comical oversized claws, populate tidal marshes globally and are integral to estuarine food chains. Males wave their claws to attract mates and excavate burrows in marsh muds and sands, which serve as protection and mating sites. These crabs feed on algae and bacteria by sifting sediment with spoon-shaped mouth bristles, creating trails of processed sediment balls. They play a crucial ecological role by transferring nutrients up the food chain and are prey for birds, fish, and mammals. In Mississippi, Gulf Marsh Fiddler and Red-Jointed Fiddler crabs are particularly common and visually distinctive.
