NYS Senator, former Rome mayor says city looks like a "war zone" after tornado
Residents and leaders in the city of Rome are trying to come to terms with the extensive damage caused by a tornado that tore through the downtown area yesterday afternoon. Homes and historic buildings were destroyed, and trees and powerlines were torn down. Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency for all of Upstate, and paid a visit to Rome earlier Wednesday. WAER’s Scott Willis caught up with long-time state senator Joe Griffo of Rome, who also served as mayor from 1992 through 2003. Click the audio link above to hear the interview.

ROME — The tornado that touched ground in Rome on Tuesday left behind hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage and a community devastated by the unprecedented natural disaster. Parts of the city appeared apocalyptic as trees were uprooted, cars were flipped over, businesses were wrecked, and houses were destroyed.

(MARCY, NY – 07/17/24) – Townsquare Media Utica and its stations WFRG, WIBX, WLZW, WOUR, and WODZ will be collecting donations of bottled water for the City of Rome to assist with ongoing tornado relief efforts. There is a critical need for bottled water and Townsquare Media Utica is coordinating with multiple area businesses to assist those in need.
Rome Sports Hall of Fame holds annual golf tournament
ROME — The Rome Sports Hall of Fame (RSHF) held its 31st annual Golf Scramble Tournament on Saturday at Rome Country Club. There were three divisions with a total of 24 teams. The tournament was co-directed by former coaches Bill Fleet and Stan “Buddy” Evans, and members of the RSHF committee.

Family of four displaced after tree falls on Syracuse Westside home
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A family of four was displaced after a tree fell on their Barrett Street home Tuesday afternoon during severe weather. The Central and Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing financial assistance to the family consisting of two adults and two children.
Central New York Responders Go Above and Beyond to Assist Tornado Victims
Cleanup efforts are underway after a tornado outbreak devastated parts of Central New York, particularly the City of Rome. With over 25,000 customers in Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida County currently without power; crews from across the United States and Canada are heading to the area to assist with restoration. A State of Emergency has since been declared by Governor Kathy Hochul to further assist with recovery efforts.
