Smoke fills Delta Lake Inn during small fire Sunday
ROME — The Delta Lake Inn became filled with smoke after rags caught fire while the restaurant was closed Sunday afternoon, according to the Rome Fire Department. “It was some rags that were used for painting or cleaning,” explained Rome Fire Chief David Gratch. The rags were in a storage or laundry room at the restaurant on Fish Hatchery Road and they somehow caught on fire, he stated. The cause of that fire is under investigation.

Syracuse, NY – Every morning, starting at 5:30 a.m., more than 700 people make a daily trek to Erie Boulevard East for the medicine that keeps them alive. Some, like nurses or construction workers, wake up as early as 3:30 a.m. to get in line before their workday. Others drive an hour from Madison or Cayuga counties. Over time, some move closer to Syracuse to shorten the trip. Parents leave sleeping children at daycare or with loved ones before sunrise to make it before the doors close at 10:30 a.m. Some bring along a groggy toddler.

On Monday, Isael Cruz was sentenced to 2 years in prison for attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He was originally charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Syracuse seeks new housing at site where restaurant operated for nearly a century
Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse officials are trying to bring housing to the site of a once-iconic South Side Syracuse restaurant. Mayor Ben Walsh’s administration plans to seek proposals for redevelopment of the former Cafe Garzone at 2426 South Ave. The family-owned restaurant operated there from 1921 through 2010. The city seized it in 2014 due to more than $76,000 in back taxes and late fees that hadn’t been paid since 2006.

A pair of memorable Syracuse Orange women’s basketball players are heading off to Paris to compete in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. Former center Kayla Alexander and former guard Alexis Peterson officially earned roster spots to compete for the Canadian and German national teams, respectively. Motorcycle crash in Verona sends one to hospital
VERONA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A motorcycle accident in the Town of Verona on Friday, July 12 has sent one person to the hospital, according to Oneida County Sheriffs. Police were called to Rome New London Road in the Town of Verona at approximately 7 pm on Friday. Further investigation found that the operator of the motorcycle — later identified as 27-year-old Zachary Schnackenberg of Utica — was driving down Rome New London Road at a high rate of speed. Officers say that Schnackenberg tried to navigate a curve when his motorcycle exited the roadway.
