County Jail Inmate Faces Escape Charge After Jumping from Jail Roof
A Chautauqua County Jail inmate who was involved in an incident in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area last month is facing a new charge after he briefly escaped custody on Thursday. The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division says 36-year-old Eric Ryals of Alabama gained access to the jail's rooftop at about 12:30 PM and ran from corrections officers who were actively pursuing him. Ryals allegedly ignored commands to surrender while on the roof, then jumped from the roof and exited the facility when he landed on the lawn, on the Elm Street side of the facility. Ryals was quickly taken into custody, as a perimeter had been set up surrounding the jail. Ryals was transported to ECMC for treatment of injuries he suffered during his escape. No members of the public were harmed. A warrant charging Ryals with 1st-degree escape was signed by the Chautauqua Town Court judge.
