Will the lot at Prospect and Lemay ever get a Kum & Go? Here's what we know.

Plans for a Prospect Road Kum & Go have come and gone.

The proposal for a 4,000-square-foot, four-pump Kum & Go gas station at the southwest corner Lemay Avenue and East Prospect Road has been abandoned following Maverik's acquisition of the Iowa-based gas station chain last year. The property is now for sale and expected to go under contract with an undisclosed buyer, its listing agent Zander Rodriguez told the Coloradoan on Monday.

Kum & Go had set its sights on the corner — the longtime home of Fort Collins' last full-service gas station, Hospital Automotive, and two additional homes — years ago. The convenience store got conditional approval for the project through a public hearing back in 2022 and purchased 949 E. Prospect Road and 1607 S. Lemay Ave. for $2.1 million in April 2023, according to Larimer County property records.

Hospital Automotive and its adjacent homes were razed to make way for the new station, but progress soon halted. While the project proceeded to the final plan stage, Kum & Go didn't record the necessary documents during the development process, senior Fort Collins city planner Kai Kleer said.

Meanwhile, Maverik finalized its acquisition of Kum & Go's roughly 400 stores last August and announced it would rebrand existing Kum & Go stores in Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming into Maverik stations, according to the Des Moines Register.

Since the company prefers highway sites, they decided to abandon Kum & Go's plans at Prospect Road and Lemay Avenue and put the property up for sale, according to Rodriguez.

Colorado is currently home to 98 Maverik stations, including one in Fort Collins, one in Windsor, one in Wellington and three in Loveland.

Reporting by Philip Joens and Tyler Jett of the Des Moines Register contributed to this report.
