An air quality advisory has been issued because of the Alexander Mountain Fire burning in Larimer County.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued the advisory Monday afternoon, and it's in effect through 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 30.

"Periods of moderate to heavy smoke will be possible downwind of the fire in Loveland, Windsor, Severance, and southern parts of the Fort Collins area," the advisory warns.

If smoke is thick where you are, remain indoors, the agency said. People with heart disease or respiratory illnesses, along with the very young and older adults, should be especially careful.

If visibility is less than 5 miles, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy, the agency said.

In addition to smoke, ozone levels may also be elevated in the area, the health department said.
