In about six years time, massive floating wind turbines – nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower – could line the shores of the Samoa Peninsula. At a special meeting on Tuesday, staff with the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District unveiled a draft simulation showing how the Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind Heavy Lift Marine Terminal – the staging and integration facility where the gigantic wind turbines components would be fully assembled – would transform our view of the bay.
Rickner Sentenced for Matricide and Related Felonies
Convicted murderer Matthew Earl Rickner, 30, was sentenced a total of 60 years, six months for matricide, the shooting of Phyllis Rickner, his mother to l last December 29. Rickner was given the maximum sentence of 40 years to Life for Count 1, violation of Penal Code 187 by Superior Court Judge Darren McElfresh. The judge further ordered an enhancement of additional 20 years plus six months on several related felonies. All sentences will run consecutively.
Berry Summit Vista Point reopens with new improvements
EUREKA, Calif. — Upgrades to the Berry Summit Vista Point on Highway Route 299, between Blue Lake and Willow Creek, are now available to the community. Caltrans partnered with several Humboldt County tribes to make this project happen. This includes improvements to welcoming amenities for visitors with a newly added restroom, solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations, added trash cans in picnic areas, along with viewing benches to enjoy the scenery.
Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department crew helping contain Hill Fire
EUREKA, Calif. — The Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department is also doing their part to help contain the Hill Fire. Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Todd Wright says Monday, July 22, was the busiest the Hawkins Bar water tender has been on this assignment as they were set up drafting at a pond, barely filling fast enough to keep up with the number of engines coming to get water.
