Suspects in Fatal Hit and Run Crash Turn Themselves in to Hoopa Tribal
For purposes of the CHP 288, fatal victim information is releasable through the coroner. On July 19, 2024, at approximately 11:40 PM, the CHP Humboldt Communication Center (HCC) received a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash on SR-96, west of Shoemaker Road. Based on CHP’s preliminary investigation, it appears this crash occurred when 25-year-old Joseph McCovey stepped into the westbound lane of SR-96 directly into the path of a 2015 Kia Soul driven by 18-year-old Neo McKindley. As a result of this action, Mr. McCovey was struck by the 2015 Kia Soul which subsequently left the scene of the crash.

11 zones downgraded to normal in Shelly Fire
Updated at 7:50 a.m. -- The Shelly Fire footprint is expected to stay the same today, according to a news release from the Klamath National Forest. "The fire’s footprint is expected to stay largely the same this morning into the night. Areas around Kidder Creek and Patterson Creek may continue to smolder in isolated pockets, but these pose little threat to control lines," the release said. "Shelly Fire operations is reducing the number of personnel and equipment while continuing to focus on suppression repair. Drivers in the area should remain alert for fire personnel and heavy equipment on or near the roadways."
