Fort McCoy introduces new Garrison Commander

FORT MCCOY, Wis. (WKBT) -- Sheyla Baez Ramirez never thought she would be a garrison commander.

"When I first joined, I never thought I would make a career out of it, but here I am 25 years later," said Ramirez.

But all that changed today, with 25 years of Army experience, Ramirez believes her extensive background makes her well suited for this leadership role.

"I have a worth of knowledge that I can bring to the table," said Ramirez.

As the new garrison commander she will be responsible for overseeing operations and supporting the station troops.

She says she is ready to provide robust support for the Army in any upcoming operations.

"I want to make sure we stand ready to support Wisconsin or any neighbor state in the event of a natural disaster," said Ramirez.

Former Garrison Commander Stephen Messenger says he looks forward to the new kind of leadership Ramirez will bring.

"She is going to do amazing. Like I say in every change of command, the new commander is not better or worse but completely different. That's a good thing, a fresh look and fresh ideas here at Fort McCoy," said Messenger.
