Color will cover a new development in downtown when a renowned artist transforms the building with a mosaic mural.

Fort Myers resident David Acevedo has been selected by the Zimmer Development Company as the creator of the image for their mural project.

The company commissioned Acevedo to create a piece exclusively for the project, which is expected to be unveiled later this year.

The mosaic mural, entitled after Acevedo’s piece “The Living Lands,” will be installed near First Street at the Zimmer Development Company’s multi-family development, The Ivy. The artwork depicts a mangrove as the main subject, symbolizing the protection of our coasts. The rest of the abstract elements serve as symbols of what Southwest Florida represents for the artist.

Acevedo moved to the area in 2000. He is a co-founder of the popular Fort Myers Art Walk event and founder of DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts, The Union Artist Studios and most recently, co-founder of Arts & Eats Café. As a mixed media and multidisciplinary artist, he has created hundreds of artworks and exhibited in numerous individual and group exhibitions in and outside the United States. His recent body of work focuses on his roots, stemming from his upbringing on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, and his ever-present search for bits and pieces of an idealistic past. These elements mix with an impeccable palette of colors and textures, creating a fantastical scenery where imagination and reality find cohesiveness.

The mural will be unveiled later this year, but is expected to depict Southwest Florida’s mangroves.

“Zimmer Development Company is excited to announce this collaborative partnership with renowned artist David Acevedo, the Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency, and the Fort Myers Public Art Committee,” says Development Manager Spencer Peterson. “This dynamic collaboration aims to bring together artistic visionaries to transform David Acevedo’s exceptional piece into a breathtaking mosaic mural.” ¦
