Hulu’s latest documentary series, At Witt’s End: The Hunt for a Killer, re-examines the brutal murder of Melissa Witt. The four-part series dives deeper into the case and reveals shocking details about Witt’s disappearance and slaying. The series will also feature how law enforcement agencies investigated the case and tried to find the culprit. The documentary series is currently streaming on Hulu.

ABC News reported that Melissa Witt wanted to surprise her mother by visiting Bowling World in December 1994. The outlet mentioned that Witt’s mother played a bowling league at the Bowling World in Fort Smith, Arkansas. According to an official website, Witt reached the parking lot of the venue but never made it inside the building. Based on the evidence found at the parking lot, investigators believed that someone kidnapped Witt.

ABC News reported that authorities found blood in Melissa Witt’s car and the parking lot. Investigators also noted there were signs of struggle. As a result, police initiated an investigation and started a search operation. More than a month after her disappearance, two hunters found Witt’s naked body in the Ozark National Forest. As authorities continued the investigation, they found a prime suspect in the case, Charles Ray Vines.

Who killed Melissa Witt? Murder case explained

According to the investigators, Charles Ray Vines had a criminal history and tried to kill a 16-year-old girl. At the time, authorities arrested Vines in another case of rape and attempting to murder a teenage girl. Meanwhile, he was also accused in the rape and murder case of another woman. Eventually, in 2000, the court found Vines guilty in both cases and received a death sentence, per ABC News.

After his conviction, police tried striking a deal with Charles Ray Vines and stated that his death sentence would be changed to a life sentence if he confessed to the unsolved cases. Detectives working on the Melissa Witt murder case wanted to talk to Vines about the case because the culprit previously drew maps of the Ozark National Forest. However, they couldn’t conduct his interview because of his deteriorating health. According to ABC News, Vines died in 2019 before he could be interviewed. However, he remained a suspect after his death.

Although the case remains unsolved, authorities had another suspect in their minds who is currently behind bars.
