FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Toronto Raptors player Malik Williams helps hand out the 500 backpacks at the second annual Bookbag Give-A-Way event.

Williams, a Snider High School graduate, and his family are the organizers of the event. He said he understands the hardship of growing up in an underprivileged community and wanted to do his part in giving back to his hometown.

“We’ve got the ability to give back, so why not do it,” Williams said. “Seeing the smiles on all the kids faces and watching everyone show up lets us know we’re doing something right.”

Beyond the supplies, bookbags, haircuts and lunches being distributed, there will also be a bounce house, face paint and balloon artists. Additionally, Kona Ice and Hot Dog Boyz, LLC are vendors at the event.

The Bookbag Give-A-Way is held at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA and begins at noon on Sunday, continuing as supplies last. Children must be present to receive a book bag. Parents and guardians must be present to receive a free haircut. To learn more, visit William’s Instagram where the flier is posted.

The Renaissance Pointe YMCA is located at 2323 Bowser Avenue.
