TCU’s recruiting class suffered a significant blow Wednesday as four-star quarterback Ty Hawkins flipped his commitment to rival SMU.

Hawkins had been committed to TCU over a year and was the second highest ranked prospect in the 2025 class. A top-150 prospect in the class, Hawkins was one of the best quarterbacks in the state the last two seasons at Johnson High in San Antonio.

In two seasons as a starter Hawkins threw for over 4,000 yards, 54 touchdowns and also rushed for over 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns. Whispers of other schools going after Hawkins began earlier this summer when Hawkins took an official visit to the Mustangs on June 10.

Hawkins took an official visit to TCU less than two weeks later. Things went quiet for the next week or so until Hawkins announced he would be transferring from Johnson to football powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida on Tuesday. Roughly 24 hours later Hawkins was a Mustang.

Hawkins’ decommitment dropped the Horned Frogs’ class to No. 16 in the 247Sports composite team rankings, but TCU still has the No. 1 class in the Big 12 with 20 commitments.

As for what it means for the future of the roster, it always stings to lose a quarterback of Hawkins’ talent. However, the Horned Frogs still have a quarterback of the future candidate in true freshman Hauss Hejny. The coaching staff is high on the talent of the former Aledo star.

With Hejny potentially only being a redshirt freshman next season it lessens the impact of not having a 2025 quarterback. Most of the elite signal callers in the class are already committed, so the staff will either need to flip a prospect or try to find a transfer that fits with the roster.

TCU will travel to face SMU on Sept. 21.
