Budget cuts at WSU trim 40 vacant positions
Winona State University (WSU) made $7 million in reductions in its 2025 budget, which includes eliminating 40 vacant positions. The Minnesota State System Board of Trustees approved the budget last month, WSU Vice President of Finance and Administration Scott Ellinghuysen said. The budget cuts were driven by enrollment decline, Ellinghuysen said. “... We do receive funding from the [state] legislature, but the vast, vast majority of our budget is, like any other business, it’s student revenue related, or revenue related,” he said. He also noted, “I think the university has experienced some enrollment declines … Hopefully we feel at a place where those have stopped and then maybe even turned around and go into a slight increase.” He added, “And we’re always thankful for what the legislature does to support higher education. This year, they weren’t able to do as much. They did a lot the year before.”
WSU hosts digital media conference

Winona State University’s campus was rich with ideas and questions last weekend, as it hosted the International Digital Media and Arts Association (iDMAa) conference.
