JOPLIN, MO – For fighters like Charles Hill and Isaiah Brisco, the mental and physical toughness of boxing make the sport special.

“It’s testing you in every way that you can possibly be tested,” said Brisco.

“Boxing tests you physically, mentally, and sometimes even spiritually. It’s all up to you when you’re in the ring.”

Fans piled in to Goo’s Boxing to watch many great bouts this week. The sport requires hard work and dedication, but few schools actually carry it, making it hard for athletes to gain exposure.

Erron Wright has coached many great fighters over the years, and to him, the sport is about more than scholarships.

“When boxers come in and they’ve had a hard time or if they come from a great family, we’re also family to them,” said Wright.

“Inside the gym, the boxing club, or whenever we’re working 1-on-1 with boxers, a strong relationship develops.”

The strong relationships are formed through toughness, coming from minutes in the ring taking punch after punch. A boxer, like Hill, faces toughness through tragedy with the sport making him stronger.

“I’m carrying the weight,” said Hill.

“With my parents passing away at a young age, and seeing my family here, it really pushes me. I want to show other people that I can make it.”

Hill would go on to win his bout, as well as the hearts of many in the crowd. Wright said his boxing club will look to host another event in the spring.
