STEM learning is hands-on at iLEAD
When it comes to American education, most educators agree: the “sage on the stage” is dead. Gone are the days when a teacher stands in front of note-taking students who parrot the information back on a test. Pedagogy has been moving to group work, experiential learning, and computer research. Nowhere is hands-on learning more important than in STEM or STEAM education.

When should police be involved at school? A California bill would let teachers make the call
In the final week of session, legislators are debating whether to give more leeway to public school teachers when to report students to law enforcement. Supporters say disabled and students of color are unfairly disciplined, but opponents say school safety is at risk. The post When should police be involved at school? A California bill would let teachers make the call appeared first on Long Beach Post.
‘Brutal’ trade-offs keep some South Bay farmworkers laboring in dangerous heat
As Cesilia Perez Lopez harvested cherries on the outskirts of Gilroy early this summer, the temperature in the field crawled into the 90s. She and her co-workers desperately needed water. But a jug carrying their supply had spilled earlier that day, and when she asked the foreman to replace the water he was supposed to provide, he ignored her, even as the farmworkers toiled through the mounting heat.
California Legislature ramps up for final week
The California Legislature is in its (sometimes) frantic final week, racing to pass bills by the Saturday deadline. Monday, lawmakers pulled some last-minute maneuvering to extend the time allowed for floor amendments (the deadline was last Friday) to five bills, including ones on paid family leave, mental competency of defendants and environmental reviews of hydrogen […]
Marc Andreessen’s Family Plans to Build a ‘Visionary’ Subdivision in California
Marc Andreessen is always trying to build stuff. For years, his motto has been “it’s time to build,” which I think he means metaphorically, though lately he’s been literally trying to build stuff. As a prominent backer of the California Forever project—the troubled effort to build a brand new metropolis on thousands of acres of Bay Area farmland—Andreessen has been laboring to take billionaire-backed urban planning to the next level. And while that effort may have stalled, it would appear that those close to him are still very much interested in building stuff in the Bay Area, albeit on a much smaller scale.
Which 2024 California bills will Gavin Newsom sign into law?
For California laws, the buck does really stop at Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. While the Legislature approves hundreds of bills each session — and will add to that list before adjourning Saturday — Newsom decides whether they become law. As of Aug. 15, Newsom had signed 164 bills and vetoed four. He has until Sept. […]
