FOX23 looks into what effect sports can have on kids' mental health

    2024-05-23

TULSA, Okla. — Mental health, a topic that's been discussed nationally, but sports has been a game changer for children's mental health.

"It was very new for me, it was my first time trying out for anything and I really think it helped me with my anxiety throughout the school," Booker T. High School freshman Vera Watkins said. "It was easier to make friends because you've done it before and you also had friends too that you can connect with."

According to a national survey by the Kids Mental Health Foundation, parents strongly value the benefits of sports that help build a child's sense of connection and belonging; like teamwork, friendship and joy.

With sports having a positive impact on children's emotional, physical and mental health, Watkins said joining the softball team at Carver Middle School helped with her anxiety.

Watkins said as it served as an escape from school, it provided lessons for her to take later in life.

"Coach Janna would always tell us to try our best. We'd always say it before the games and everything," she said. "I think I really took that out of it and just try my best in everything I do, on and off the field."

Theresa and Leith Watkins, Vera's grandparents, said having that sort of distraction is very important.

"Just encouraging them, that affirmation, that smile, that 'You're okay, you're doing great.' How many kids hear that from their own parents sometimes? Some don't," Theresa said.

For children growing up, Leith said it's critical for them to have that outlet.

"It sure helps as you go on, in middle school, in high school and even as you get to college or your work life. To having gone through some of that; the self discipline, learning to set goals for yourself and to get better, it's a big deal," Leith said.
