CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A “seed library” is debuting in Chula Vista, offering up plant vegetable, flower and herb seeds to the public.

According to the city, the up-and-coming concept is meant to foster community engagement in sustainable gardening practices, as well as promote biodiversity in local ecosystems.

Launched by Chula Vista Public Library, all three branches — Civic Center, South Chula Vista and Otay Ranch Town Center — will be participating in the initiative.

    How it works

The Chula Vista libraries will provide the seeds initially, then those who plant seeds this year are encouraged to come back with seeds to donate next year to contribute to the “seed library.”

Each seed variety will come with a QR code for information on plant care.

“When we share and save seeds, we aren’t just helping build a more varied and sustainable future,” said Natalie Vega, a branch manager at the Otay Ranch Town Center Library. “We are also strengthening the connection between people and bringing them closer to the roots of food.”

Additionally, the three libraries will host several workshops for kids to promote the “seed library.” There will be nature walks at local parks and garden-themed story times, the city confirmed.

The program is funded through a $30,000 California State Library grant.
