Garrard Co. Animal Shelter issues ‘Code Red’: 8 dogs to be euthanized next week if not adopted

LANCASTER, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The Garrard County Animal Shelter has issued “code red” due to overcrowding, and intakes have been closed.

According to the animal shelter, this means that several dogs could be euthanized during Memorial Day week if not adopted.

The shelter called for the public’s help on Friday, seeking people willing to adopt. According to shelter staff, the organization has taken in several stray dogs and over 35 cats and kittens in the last three days, all of whom are still nursing.

“We are out of kennels, at this point, we will be euthanizing dogs early next week if we don’t get some adopted quickly,” the Garrad County Animal Shelter said. “This is not what we want to do but unfortunately, we are running out of options. With no rescues pulling, no adoptions happening, and now we are out of kennels for everything!”

However, the eight dogs pictured are fully sponsored, along with several others.

“Please don’t blame us, we are doing all we can to keep everyone safe. We can’t stress enough for everyone to spay and neuter their pets, keep your pets contained, and chip your pets so we can get them home quicker,” the shelter said.
