FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — There are some new updates in the case of Amber Spradlin, who was found dead in a home in Martin in June 2023.

The attorney for one of the accused killers, Michael McKinney III, filed to dismiss the indictment .

Looking back on the past year, Spradlin’s cousin, Debbie Hall, reflects on what the healing process has been like.

“We have not been able to move on at all,” Hall said. “I feel like my life has been on hold for the last 13.5 months. This has definitely been the worst year of my life. It’s just filled with sadness and filled with anger. And it’s every day.”

McKinney III; his father, Michael McKinney II; and Josh Mullins were indicted on July 30 in connection with 38-year-old Spradlin’s death.

“Amber was such a sweetheart. She certainly didn’t deserve what they did to her,” Hall said.

Now, the attorney for McKinney III, or “MK,” has filed a motion to dismiss the indictment due to procedural flaws.

Hall doesn’t seem too worried about this motion getting very far, though.

“Once I found out what it was, I wasn’t too upset or worried about it,” Hall said. “It’s just standard legal tactics. And I’ve read the motion, and there’s really no merit to his claims.”

The defense argued the indictment wasn’t properly filed, which, in turn, violates grand jury secrecy and prejudices the defendant.

Hall said she knew about the arrests but had no reason to say anything about them, knowing that could interfere with the investigation.

“That was my right as being family of the victim to know that,” Hall said. “And I certainly didn’t let anybody else know about it because I didn’t want it to slip out and let the suspected know what was going on.”

Although nothing will bring Spradlin back, Hall hopes her family will get some sort of closure.

“There is really no true justice, but I want to see the murderer put away for the rest of his life, or at least the rest of my life,” Hall said.

McKinney II is currently out on bond , with his dentistry license suspended , while the younger McKinney has a bond set at $5 million, and Mullins’ bond is set at $100,000.
