KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — A super blue moon will light up Kentucky skies tonight!

While the full supermoon has technically already peaked, as of 2:26 p.m. ET, the moon will appear full on Monday and will last through Wednesday, according to NASA.

The August full moon, typically known as the “ Sturgeon Moon ” according to the Farmer’s Almanac, will also appear larger in the night sky since it’s within 90% of its perigee or closest point in its orbit.

The Sturgeon Moon is named after the popular fish that is caught more easily this month in the Great Lakes, NASA notes.

    LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

“Although it will not look blue, as the third full Moon in a season with four full Moons, this will be a Blue Moon. The first recorded use of “Blue Moon” in English dates from 1528,” writes retired NASA Program Executive Gordon Johnston.

However, Johnston noted that, since the 1940s, the term blue moon has also been used to describe the second full moon in a month with two full moons.

The supermoon will appear roughly 15%–30% brighter, according to EarthSky , while space.com claims the moon will appear to be 10%–11% larger than normal in size. NASA confirmed that the supermoon is the biggest and brightest full moon in the sky each year.
