Possible bill could change when Kentucky teens can get their driving permit

FRANKFORT, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — There could be a big change in how long Kentucky teens have to wait to get their driver’s licenses.

Since 1996, teens in Kentucky have had to wait until their 16th birthday to first get their driver’s permit. Then, six months later, they would be eligible to test for their license.

Lawmakers in Frankfort are talking about changing the law to let kids get their permit when they turn 15—and if they have that permit for at least six months before their 16th birthday, they can try to get their license.

Representative Steven Rudy said he plans to gather more opinions before offering a bill when the new general assembly session starts in January
