DENVER ( KDVR ) — Most school districts in the metro offer traditional learning experiences in brick-and-mortar schools, however, that doesn’t always work for all students.

GOAL High School is an alternative option.

They offer a blended online learning model where students can take classes online on their own schedule, at their own pace, but can also get in-person hands-on help at drop-in centers.

“We serve students differently, and because we’re a school of choice, the students can come to us, and they can choose the method in which we’re serving them. They say, ‘We want to go to school this way, and we want to engage with our higher learning this way.’ So that’s good for us, I think, and it’s good for them, and that’s what’s most important,” said Derek Staves, Denver regional principal at GOAL High School.

It’s one of the largest high schools in the state.

This year, they are anticipating nearly 6,500 students to enroll. Unlike some districts across the metro, GOAL’s enrollment is increasing — more than 1,300 students graduated last year.

They attribute their success to the flexibility.

A lot of our students are helping support their families and working, and they have to work around their schedule. So, sometimes going in and having to report to a school at eight in the morning and you don’t leave until four o’clock could impact their ability to help support their families. We are in an environment right now where families need help,” said Staves.

If students are struggling with food or child care, GOAL can also help with that.

The open enrollment deadline is Sept. 30, so students can try out a traditional school and if it doesn’t work for them, they can always enroll at GOAL.
