LITTLETON, Colo. ( KDVR ) — Two teachers’ high-end mountain bikes were stolen off their truck in the Chatfield High School parking lot, and the whole thing was caught on camera.

English teachers Lou Goldin and Brock Blume never expected what would happen Monday afternoon as they were preparing to welcome kids back to class.

“Coming back at lunch, I get a bunch of text messages; my phone is blowing up and they were saying there was a guy taking some bike,” said Blume.

Security cameras around the school caught the crime unfolding.

“It’s really violating because we had it on our cars, it’s our property, we had it locked,” said Goldin, who is also a mountain bike coach at Chatfield High School.

The thieves made off with the two bikes that were in the same spot where the teachers had parked them for years.

“I’ve had it there locked on my car for years just in case one of the mountain bike coaches would want to ride after work or something like that or go to practice. I thought it was the one parking lot that was really safe because security there, cameras, it’s at a public high school,” Goldin said.

The crime left them both with a financial blow.

“It was roughly $16,000 in the back of the truck that day,” Blume said.

Now, they plan to park their bikes inside the classroom.

“Kind of derailed for this little bit of time because emotions are kind of high. You have to go through insurance, but then you also have kids coming soon, so you have a job that you got to do, it’s just hard,” Goldin said.

“How brazen and how desperate people are in our culture to just do that, there were people standing around watching this happen, and they just continued to go forward with this crime,” said Blume. “It makes you wonder what if someone did get closer. We’re just really happy no one got hurt.”

Days away from welcoming kids back to school, they hope someone in the community spots the suspect’s vehicle.

Blume had this message for the person responsible:

“What they really don’t understand is these bikes are personal to people who ride them, who put money and time into them,” said Blume. “Unfortunately, on this kind of sale, it’s not just on the up and up, and we would love to have the bikes back. They mean more to us and every other bike rider out there.”

The teachers both stress the importance of registering and locking your bike securely. It’s something they both did in this situation. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
