    Wheat Ridge PD: Underage driver hit 80 mph before crash, seriously injuring 5

    DENVER (KDVR) – A juvenile is accused of driving at least 40 mph over the speed limit and running a red light before a crash that seriously injured five people in May, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

    The suspect was in custody as of Monday and faces a total of 10 felony charges for the May 14 crash, which happened at the intersection of Kipling Street and West 51st Place.

    The 10 counts included five counts of reckless vehicular assault and five counts of DUI-related vehicular assault.

    The underage suspect was allegedly driving at speeds of over 80 mph while on both Interstate 70 and Kipling Street, according to police. The latter has a speed limit of 40 mph.

    The driver then allegedly ran a red light before crashing into two vehicles.

    On the day of the crash, police reported that there were seven people total – four teens and three adults – transported after the crash. The extent of the injuries sustained by all seven people was not reported. However, Monday’s update indicated that five of them suffered serious injuries.

    Additional information about the suspect, including their name and age, was not publicly available because they were underage.
