(FOX40.COM) — Over 60 volunteers with Nevada County Sheriff’s Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team (HEART) recently got hands-on training on how to safely and quickly evacuate a number of different animals in the case of an emergency or rescue, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

The volunteers met at the Nevada County Horsemen’s Facility for their annual animal handling training where they attended lectures before working directly with the animals.

The volunteers trained with horses, donkeys, mini-horses, cows, llamas, goats and dogs to be prepared for almost any situation during an emergency evacuation.

“It was an amazing day of training so that we can be prepared to respond when our community needs us!,” Animal Control Supervisor Stefanie Geckler said.

This is just part of HEART’s year-round training to maintain and increase its effectiveness in emergency animal evacuations.

HEART is a non-profit organization operated in partnership with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers that focuses on rescuing and evacuating animals during emergencies.
