MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie man out on bond for attempted murder has been arrested after he reportedly sold fentanyl pills during a controlled drug transaction by the Muncie Delaware County Drug Task Force.

According to court documents, filed in Delaware County on Thursday, 30-year-old Eric Newton has preliminarily been charged with one count of dealing in a narcotic drug more than 10 grams, a Level 2 felony, and one count of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony.

On Oct. 10, 2023, officials with the Muncie Delaware County Drug Task Force, along with officials from the Drug Enforcement Agency, reportedly conducted a controlled buy of pressed M30 Fentanyl pills from Newton.

A confidential source reportedly set up a transaction with Newton for 200 pressed M30 Fentanyl pills for $450. The deal reportedly took place in a business parking lot on the south side of Muncie.

According to the documents, Newton was seen by detectives entering the source’s vehicle and shortly exited the vehicle. After the reported transaction, the source reportedly turned over a clear bag that contained “a large amount of pressed M30 Fentanyl pills.”

On Wednesday, investigators with the task force saw Newton and attempted to make a traffic stop. The documents said that Newton fled from officers in the vehicle at a “high rate of speed.”

Officers were able to deploy stop sticks, according to the documents, and one of the tires of Newton’s vehicle was deflated. Newton ran from the scene on foot and was arrested after a short foot chase. During the chase, two handguns were reportedly thrown from the vehicle.

According to the court documents, Newton is being held in Delaware County without bail, pending the filing of formal charges.
