1 hospitalized after crash on Interstate 70 in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — One person was hospitalized after a crash on Interstate 70 in Hancock County Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the county’s 911 center reported that officials first received word of a serious crash on I-70 westbound around 7:03 p.m. Callers at the scene told operators the crash involved two semis and a pickup truck.

Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Greenfield Fire Department arrived at the scene soon after dispatchers got wind of the crash. First responders had the interstate shut down at mile marker 106 so they could investigate and clean up the crash.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation’s traffic map , all lanes of I-70 westbound between County Road 600 East and North County Road 400 East were closed as of 7:22 p.m.

Officials confirmed the interstate was shut down until 8:20 p.m.

First responders requested a medical helicopter in case any of the individuals involved in the crash had suffered severe injuries.

The helicopter was ultimately disregarded because the person who was hurt in the crash did not sustain severe enough injuries to justify being airlifted. Officials indicated the person was still transported via ambulance to IU Methodist Hospital by GFD medics.

A Hancock County 911 center spokesperson also confirmed the trucks that crashed did not spill any hazardous materials during the crash.
