MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — A probationary deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has been fired after being the subject of a reported criminal investigation by the Indiana State Police.

According to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ruben Marté, the sheriff in Monroe County, was notified by the Indiana State Police on Thursday that they were conducting a criminal investigation into alleged official misconduct of probationary Deputy Jeffrey Freeman Jr.

The alleged misconduct reportedly occurred when Freeman was on duty on Wednesday. The release did not provide any further information on what reportedly occurred.

After the notification from the Indiana State Police, the command staff for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office conducted an administrative review of the incident, which found that Freeman had reportedly violated department policy with his conduct. Freeman was then placed on administrative leave without pay, a measure that is separate from the criminal investigation.

On Friday, Freeman was served with a termination notice from the office based on the reported policy violations. This comes after Freeman was first appointed to the department in March.

The release said that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is fully cooperating with the investigation by the Indiana State Police.
