FISHERS, Ind. — Fishers police used drones and K9 officers last week to find and arrest a shooting suspect who was hiding in a field after fleeing a traffic stop – and the incident was caught on video.

Fishers PD posted on social media Wednesday describing the incident. Officers had conducted a traffic stop on Aug. 21, pulling over driver Jermaine Hood of Anderson for a traffic violation on I-69.

Hood reportedly pulled over before driving his Nissan Altima away, fleeing police. Officers eventually found Hood’s car abandoned and empty behind a building in the 6800 block of 96th Street and a K9 pursuit ensued.

The K9 tracked the suspect into a field near the Municipal Airport before officers deployed drones to find Hood’s heat signature. The field was reportedly growing beans and had high grass, affecting officers’ views.

Eventually, the suspect was tracked down and arrested without further incident. The 29-year-old Hood was apprehended on several outstanding warrants in relation to a shooting and charged with resisting law enforcement.

“The drones provided crucial aerial support, allowing the officers on the ground to maintain a safe distance while monitoring the suspect’s movements,” FPD said. “In addition to the drones, one of our K-9s played a vital role in the apprehension. As the suspect attempted to hide in a field, K-9 Tiesto followed the suspect’s scent and they came out of hiding when they heard the officer’s commands to do so or risk being apprehended by our K-9.”

FPD said that the arrest highlights the collaborative efforts of “dedicated law enforcement personnel and the integration of innovative technology with traditional policing methods.”
