    Indianapolis breaks heat-related record on Friday after airport hits 96 degrees

    INDIANAPOLIS — The city of Indianapolis beat a weather-related record on Friday.

    According to the Indianapolis office of the National Weather Service, the temperature at the Indianapolis International Airport reached 96 degrees at 2:45 p.m. on Friday. This is a new record for Aug. 30 and the hottest day of 2024 so far.

    The old record, officials said, was 95 degrees on Aug. 30, 1964. Friday was also the hottest day in Indianapolis since July 5, 2022. This is the latest day where Indianapolis has reached at or above 96 degrees in 11 years.

    According to previous reports , this is the last day for Indianapolis’ expected heat wave, with a cold front expected to slide through overnight. Rain is expected to occur throughout Central Indiana into Saturday, as temperatures fall into the lower 80s on Saturday.
