IROQUOIS COUNTY, Ind. — A suspect is dead and a Newton County Sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition after shooting near the Illinois-Indiana border.

According to a press release from Illinois State Police, deputies with the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department — an Illinois agency — engaged in a pursuit with an armed suspect who was believed to be holding a person hostage on Sunday.

During the chase, the suspect crossed into Indiana. At that time, deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office — an Indiana agency — joined the chase.

Both the suspect and a Newton County Sheriff’s deputy were struck by gunfire. The suspect, who has since been identified as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Illinois, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The NCSO deputy was transported from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition. Per an NCSO Facebook post , the deputy was later transferred to a trauma center via medical helicopter.

Per Illinois State Police, law enforcement did not locate a hostage inside the suspect’s vehicle.

Illinois State Police are leading the investigation of the incident. Once they are done examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, they will turn their findings over to the Iroquois County State’s Attorney’s Office.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
