ANDERSON, Ind. — A Middletown man won two jackpots at an Anderson casino in mid-June. But instead of receiving the money, he was charged with a felony.

According to court documents filed in mid-July, 49-year-old Juan Anderson was charged with cheating on a gambling game, a Level 6 felony, after a reported incident at an Anderson casino on June 21.

At around 5:30 a.m., officials with the Indiana Gaming Commission were called to a casino in Anderson after a possible jackpot switch.

At around 5:16 that morning, Anderson reportedly placed a wager at a machine, causing the machine to go into bonus games/spins. On this machine, Anderson accumulated more than $2,000 in credits.

The amount in this jackpot caused the machine to go into a handpay, requiring an attendant to process the amount and have the appropriate taxes removed from the winnings. The documents said that it also requires a check with the Indiana Child Support Bureau.

After the jackpot, Anderson is reportedly seen on security footage calling a woman, later identified as his wife. Anderson’s wife then processes the jackpot, even though Anderson was the person who won the jackpot.

When Anderson’s wife was asked if she was the person who placed the wager, she told the commission officer that it was actually Anderson who won.

“(The officer) explained to her if her husband won the jackpot, then he needed to claim the jackpot,” the documents said. “(The officer) then spoke with Juan Anderson, who explained he won the jackpot. However, his wife enjoys winning jackpots.”

Anderson initially did not provide a reason to which he did not want to claim the jackpot. After a child support check was conducted with Anderson, the court documents said that he owed child support in the amount of $17,441,48.

It was then found that Anderson that had a jackpot pending from earlier in the evening worth $1,480. An attendant reportedly said that Anderson told her that she could keep the jackpot because “he would not get it because he owed child support.”

According to court documents, Anderson’s initial hearing occurred in Madison County Court in late August.
