GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A long-time representative who represents part of the Piedmont Triad has tendered his resignation.

John Faircloth (R-District 62) announced on Thursday that he was resigning from the North Carolina State House of Representatives.

His resignation is effective Sept. 6.

“I am eternally grateful to my family, friends, constituents, colleagues, and legislative staff for supporting me throughout my time in public office. It has been my life’s work to serve the community and the people that I love. Whether it be during my time in law enforcement, High Point City Council, or my current post as State Representative, I have always strived to make a positive impact on our community,” he wrote in his letter. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Guilford County for 7 terms. I am proud of the work that we have been able to accomplish for the betterment of the lives of all North Carolinians.”

Speaker Tim Moore (R-District 111) reacted to the news of his resignation, saying “It has been an absolute honor to serve alongside Representative John Faircloth.

“His dedication to our state and unwavering commitment to his constituents in Guilford County have set a high standard for public service. He has fought to protect and improve a free-market economy from excessive government control and public safety and education in North Carolina. While we will deeply miss his wisdom and experience in the legislature, I wish him all the best in this well-deserved retirement. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of leaders.”

Faircloth’s replacement for the rest of his term will likely be chosen from a pool of candidates who reside in his district by the Guilford County GOP, similar to how the Guilford County Democratic Party recently replaced outgoing representative Ashton Clemmons (D-District 52.)

He had already announced that he wasn’t running for re-election in November, and the Republican primary was won by John Blust, who will face Democrat Marjorie Benbow.
