SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A tractor trailer was stuck under a bridge in Spartanburg County for several hours on Sunday, temporarily closing a portion of New Cut Road.

Sunday afternoon drivers on New Cut Road encountered something they had never seen before, or haven’t seen in a long time .

Russian criminal’s North Carolina mansion yanked from auction at last minute; previously listed for $10 million

“Shocked, just shocked and I am amazed,” Spartanburg resident, Jeddy Sullivan told 7News about the scene. “I have been living here all my life and I have never seen it.”

A semi-truck wedged underneath a bridge near the intersection of New Cut Road and California Avenue.

“I mean things happened, but I never saw that before, so it’s kind of surprising,” Joseph, another Spartanburg resident said.

“Right now, I am seeing an 18-wheeler stuck underneath a bridge unfortunately, but we were just going to the community pool, and it just stopped us from going in,” Joseph said.

The road was temporarily closed as tow trucks and first responders worked to remove the trailer. On the road, there are signs warning that the bridge has a clearance of 12 feet, leaving drivers puzzled how the incident happened in the first place.

“I thought there were measurements on the bridge, so (the driver) would have known that he couldn’t get through there, so I just don’t understand why he tried that and to see someone actually get stuck I was really amazed,” Sullivan said.

Several hours later, the trailer was removed and towed away. Drivers said they have not encountered any incidents in this area before.

“For the most part, every time I have gone through, everyone seems to yield to one another,” Joseph said.

“People are usually courteous there and they let you through one lane at a time. I don’t usually have any problems right there,” Sullivan added.

South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene, there is no word on if there was any damage done to the bridge during the incident.
