WILKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A young Wilkes County mother is on high alert after discovering that someone placed an Apple AirTag on her car that tracks her movements without her knowledge.

Hayley Walls is a 24-year-old single mother who first became aware of the AirTag two days ago when she received a notification on her phone alerting her that her location had been tracked from her workplace to her home.

“You just never think that something like this is going to happen,” Walls said.

Walls, who is focused on her job and caring for her six-month-old, immediately began searching for the device.

“It gives the option to play sound to locate the AirTag, but it’s so fain t… You can literally only hear it from right under the car,” Walls said.

Despite days of searching, the AirTag has not been found.

The situation has forced Walls to rethink her daily routine.

“My routine is so simple, so I never really change it up. I feel like I should change it now,” Walls said. “It’s really scary. When I got home and couldn’t figure out where it was, I played the sound over and over but couldn’t hear it. I went inside, locked all my doors and windows and even moved the couch to my door. I was terrified.”

Walls reported the incident to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators asked if she had any angry ex-partners or enemies, but Walls is at a loss.

“I have no idea who this person is, but I think they’re crazy and definitely need to get some help,” Walls said. “I would ask them why they chose to put the AirTag on my car and what their intentions are.”

Walls is unsettled by the thought that someone has been monitoring her daily movements.

“They know when I come home. They know when I go to work,” she said. “If this ever happens to you, changing up your routine could be a smart move,”

Walls plans to have her car lifted in a final attempt to find the device.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone who receives a similar alert to take it seriously, report it to law enforcement and consider having their vehicle thoroughly inspected.
