SOMERSET, NJ - Pleasant weather, Motown Classics and Laughter; doesn't that sound like the perfect way to start off summer? With schools ending last week, Franklin Township’s Parks and Rec hosted their ‘Summer Kickoff’ concert yesterday at 6 pm. This event was located at the Township gazebo, with attendees sitting in the grass surrounding it.

Headlining this event was the energetic ‘Total Soul’, the same band that performed for the 2023 fireworks. They invoked nostalgia with classics like ‘My Girl’, as well as got the crowd dancing with ‘Billie Jean'.

With more than 20 years of experience, the band shone with their skills and infectious charm.

“Everybody here is a Superstar in their own way.” said a ‘Total Soul’ band member.

Total Soul’s diverse and varied collection of songs is one of the reasons why Mayra Jimenez, Program Coordinator of Special Events, selected the band. Jimenez, who has served in this position for the last 3 years, exclaimed that performers need to have a multitude of styles to appeal to Franklin’s diverse crowd.

This same appreciation of diversity was seen by the Franklin Township Cultural Council booth. Vice President Tanya Haslon and Active Member Kevin Camon spoke to TapInto about their organization's goals.

"Culture is not only just race, but the way that an individual lives or their customs in a way,” says Haslon, when explaining how she wanted to showcase cultural diversity within Franklin.

The Council was advertising two main initiatives, ‘Franklin’s Got Talent’ and the formation of a new youth community band. You can find more information on the flyers attached above.

Project Graduation also had a concession stand at the event. This was part of their efforts to raise 35k for the Class of 2025’s Project Graduation. Community members can help by engaging in their events like the clothing drive or upcoming bingo nights.

The event ended around 8 pm with the MC thanking all of the band members, as well as Myra Jimenez. You can book ‘Total Soul’ for functions by calling the number 732 (539)-1334 or visiting their website .

This event is only the start of the Summer series, and so make sure to stay tapped in for more updates!
