FREMONT, Calif. ( KRON ) — Multiple lanes of southbound Interstate 680 in Fremont were closed Thursday for several hours after a fatal collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. All lanes reopened at 1:12 p.m.

The fatal crash was reported just after 7 a.m. on southbound I-680 north of Mission Boulevard, according to a CHP incident log. CHP told KRON4 that the crash involved about five vehicles, including a big rig loaded with appropriately 10,000 pounds of beef.

The big rig struck the rear of a Toyota Venza, lost control and struck three additional vehicles as it headed down the embankment on the right shoulder, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Toyota was killed on the scene. Two other people sustained minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals. No drugs or alcohol were suspected in the crash, the CHP said.
