Fremont County continues monitoring Missouri River flooding
(Sidney) -- Projected flood levels have declined slightly for Fremont County. Flood warnings remain in effect up and down the Missouri River, with Fremont County among those currently experiencing minor flooding and expecting some moderate flooding. The warnings were issued as floodwaters worked downstream after torrential rains led to severe flooding in northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and southeast South Dakota. As of Friday morning, Fremont County Emergency Management Coordinator Clayton Long says the Missouri River gauge at Nebraska City sits at roughly 23.2 feet, with a projected crest of 24.3 feet Sunday morning. Long says the crest has declined from the original expectations earlier in the week.

Shenandoah council backs initiating 'Fremont Buried Channel Well' project
(Shenandoah) -- Shenandoah officials have taken the next steps on a water system project that would allow the city to tap into a buried aquifer in Fremont County. Meeting in regular session Tuesday night, the Shenandoah City Council unanimously approved initiating the "Fremont Buried Channel Well" project, including the possibility of acquiring agricultural land through the use of eminent domain. Last month, the council held a public hearing on the potential land acquisition of roughly five to 10 acres in Fremont County for the project, which would entail the city drilling two wells into the aquifer near 190th Street and 355th Avenue. Bob Veenstra is the city engineer for the project. Veenstra says the aquifer, which is believed to be part of an old Missouri River channel, provides a more robust water source than the current city wells near the East Nishnabotna River.
