FRENCHTOWN TWP. — A pursuit by Monroe County sheriff's deputies of a reckless vehicle led to multiple arrests Sunday night in Frenchtown Township.

Two of the people who were arrested were in a second vehicle that interjected itself into the original pursuit, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported. Those two interfered with deputies as they arrested the driver of the vehicle they originally were dispatched to investigate.

The incident began at about 8:45 p.m., Goodnough said in a news release. Deputies Austin Graham and Blake Merrill responded to the area of North Dixie Highway near Interstate 75 after Monroe County Central Dispatch received several calls regarding a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee that was reported to be driving erratically and into oncoming traffic. They located the vehicle stopped in the middle of North Dixie Highway just west of I-75.

Upon making contact with the man driving the SUV, it was learned that he did not have a driver’s license and he showed signs of intoxication, Goodnough said. When instructed to exit the vehicle, the driver refused and fled from the traffic stop southbound on North Dixie Highway.

Deputies pursued the vehicle, which continued to be driven recklessly, with the driver swerving multiple times into oncoming lanes, Goodnough said. The pursuit traveled westbound on Noble Avenue, and then northbound on North Monroe Street. During the pursuit, the driver opened the driver's door while driving and gave numerous gestures to the officers behind him.

The vehicle continued onto northbound North Telegraph Road, until reaching the entrance to Kimberly Estates Mobile Home Park, where one of the vehicle’s wheels became disabled, the sheriff reported. The driver fled from the vehicle on foot but was quickly apprehended. He proceeded to resist arrest and assault officers until he was eventually restrained.

The suspect, a 21-year-old man from Newport, was lodged at the Monroe County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, assault and battery on police, and resisting and obstructing. Charges are also being sought for operating while intoxicated. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending the issuance of formal charges and arraignment in the 1st District Court in Monroe.

During the end of the pursuit, a second vehicle, a maroon Jeep Cherokee, interjected itself in the middle of the pursuing patrol units, Goodnough said. When the pursuit came to an end and the suspect fled on foot, the two occupants of the second vehicle exited and interfered with the deputies while they were arresting the fleeing driver. The occupants of this second vehicle, a 24-year-old woman from Newport and a 54-year-old man from Detroit, were both taken into custody on charges of obstructing police.

Deputy Graham is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7758.
