19-year-old arrested after 2023 shooting death in Fresno, police say

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A 19-year-old was arrested on Wednesday for a shooting in Fresno in 2023 that left a 25-year-old man dead, the Fresno Police Department said.
Officers say 19-year-old Angel Gonzalez was arrested on Tuesday on homicide charges relating to the shooting death in 2023.

According to police, on July 16, 2023, 25-year-old Simon Martinez and his wife were leaving a party in the area of Thorne Avenue and Lorena Avenue in Fresno when they were confronted by a man with a handgun. The man demanded property from the couple.
During the confrontation, a vehicle approached and someone from inside the car shot Martinez and his wife. Martinez was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later, police say. The wife survived her injuries.
Following the incident, homicide detectives say they have identified several people associated with the suspect vehicle, including the person who attempted to rob them.

The investigation led to the 2023 arrests of 22-year-old Jesse Castillo, on suspicion of robbery and homicide charges, and 22-year-old Zachariah Rodriguez, on suspicion of being an accessory to homicide.
Homicide detectives say they ultimately identified 19-year-old Angel Gonzalez as the suspect who shot Martinez and his wife. Police say on Tuesday detectives served a search warrant at an apartment complex near Shaw Avenue and Valentine Avenue where Gonzalez was located inside.

Gonzalez was arrested, charged with suspicion of the 2023 homicide, and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
